By NEIL GROSE | What a beautiful day to be out fishing as day one of Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic Derwent Round series got underway.
All 20 teams were ready bright and early so we started at 6:45, with all teams spreading up and down the river.
Most teams seemed to get into the fish pretty early, with some teams starting to upgrade after 9am. A mixed bag was had by many as well, with quite a few trout, salmon, flathead (lots of those), mullet and trevally keeping anglers happy.
The Tackle US Big Bag for day one was taken out by Team Sportsfishtasmania.com with 6.11kgs!
Some big bream were weighed in as well, with the day one leader of the Tamar Marine Big Bream Team Richardson Devine Marine with a 1.650kg whopper!
All teams bar one weighed in fish and unfortunately team M&M had to have their day one score disqualified after they misinterpreted the rules and brought seven fish back to scale.
Day two of the Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic started out just as day one did – marvellous weather and every one on the water bright and early. The early cloud meant that any sea breeze would be later in the afternoon, so all teams headed out full of expectations.
A couple of teams weighed in early such as tasfish.com with their one fish in order to get home a bit earlier (the boys have a four hour drive) and when 3 teams came in early with little or no fish I thought it was to be a lean afternoon.
That all changed when Bream Brothers came in early with a whopping 5.8kg bag with the biggest fish of the day at 1.61kgs. Team captain Tim Farrell couldn’t contain his excitement and from there flowed a steady procession of good sized bags.
The Super-mini tank was in full working order and plenty of bream spent a few hours in the bream Hilton before joining their mates under the Austin’s Ferry Ramp!
A total of 130 fish was weighed in for the weekend, weighing a total of 133.86kgs, which is an average of 1.03Kgs — try beating that anywhere in Australia!
Eventual winners of the Derwent Round was team Sportsfishtasmania.com with a 10 fish bag of 11.56kgs, closely followed by team Strikepro with 11.36kgs.
The winning team of Patrick Sullivan and Leigh Mckenzie
They had the following plan for the two days.
“Day 1 we went up to Norske Skog paper mill, 1 fish to 10.30 on Berkley Peppered Prawn. Fish slowly came on the chew and we caught our bag using Atomic Hardz Shad 40′s in Ghost gill brown and Ghost Silver. We’d cast to reeds and surrounding brush as they were tight up against the vegetation.
Day 2 saw us up the Jordan River first off and pulled 3 fish quickly on the Berkley Peppered Prawn with a 1/16 Nitro Jigheads. We left there quickly to make the most of the extremely high tides and headed downriver and fished rocky shorelines around Moorilla and near the Bowen Bridge. Filled out our bag with Atomic Hardz Shad 40 in the same as the day before then caught a few flatchaps that coughed up some small shrimp. Changed to the Bassday Kangoku Shad in the C137 and C67 colours to resemble the shrimps and caught the kicker fish just under 1.4kg.
We fished G Loomis SJR 6400′s and Black Diamond Rods with Daiwa Airity and Luvius’s spooled with 3lb Crystal Fireline and 3lb Fammel and Sunline V-Hard leaders.”
Many thanks to all the competitors and helpers who made the event run so smoothly. Big thanks to Kevin and Eileen Cooper of the Austin’s Ferry Yacht Club for their fantastic hospitality and help.
A massive thanks to all the sponsors of the first round, Spirit of Tasmania, Fishing Tasmania, Berkley, Tackle Us, Tamar Marine, Damiki Craft Lures, Daiwa, The Drunken Admiral, The Inland Fisheries Service and sportsfishtasmania.com.
The Tackle Us Big Bag on day two was won by Bream Brothers with 5.8kgs, and the Tamar Marine Derwent Big Bream was won by Team Richardson Devine Marine with a 1.65kg specimen.
