A very tough tournament on the Derwent for Round Three in the Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic really opened the championship up.

With a very subdued Calcutta on the Howler Custom Rods pre fish briefing, most teams were talking about where they hadn’t caught fish, rather than where they had.

Young gun Isaac Harris scored the Howler Custom Rods $350 voucher, making his weekend a winner before the comp had even started.

A large crowd turned up to see the very tight weigh in

Day One

Day one started with a crisp but calm morning, which gave way to a cool, clear and light wind day.

A heap of fresh water in the system restricted visibility and lowed fish activity, so hopes were not high for a big day on the bream.

It soon became apparent that the hoped for action was nowhere to be found, with only a few teams finding early success.

Fancied teams such as Sportsfishtasmania.com and Ecogear/Nitro failed to live up to expectations, while the consistent St Helens Bait and Tackle found the fish and the top of the leader board with a very nice 5/5.88kg bag. This was just rewards after a thief stole two of their rods while filling up with fuel on their drive down to Hobart.

Quiet performers Team Lyndcraft Boats chipped away and by the time weigh in came around they had a solid bag, with a few go-to spots up there sleeve for day two.

Team Pellows Saws and Mowers used the unique spot choosing technique of flipping a coin! Heads upstream, tails downstream. It paid off in spades, with a five fish, 5kg bag for day one, keeping them in touch with third place.

The bulk of the field managed to at least bag one fish, with only three boats cooking the dreaded donuts.

Team Strikepro totally ignored their pre fish work and managed to get a very respectable 5/5.51kg bag, and everyone was hoping that finally the boys would put together two days and take out the big prize.

With only four teams managing five fish, the next best bag was three, with most boats finding a couple of kilo plus fish to keep in touch with the field.

Day Two

With it down to the wire on the last day of the series to decide who would be the overall champion team, all teams set on a crisp and calm morning full of nerves.

Teams such as sportsfishtasmania.com, Ecogear/Nitro and Cranka Pro needed to get their bag of five fish to become 2010 Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic Champions, and teams such as Strikepro just needed to hold their form from day one to take out the round and the series.

Early indications showed that is was going to be another very hit and miss day, with some of the fancied teams failing to land a single fish, while others managed a few to keep their overall chances alive.

With the stage set from 1pm when Team Lyndcraft Boats weighed in with a 5/5.73kg bag to leapfrog them into top spot, it was then a litany of bad days, missed opportunities and plain bad luck.

Fancied teams such as Ecogear/Nitro, Team Strikepro or the fancied www.tasfish.com/Bigfin didn’t land a bream.

Day one leader St Helens Bait & Tackle only managed three fish.

Team Lyndcraft Boats don’t often fish the Derwent, and used Google Earth to find a few likely spots prior to pre-fish, and then worked the spots lightly to leave plenty of fish for the ensuing days. Using mainly hardbodied lures, the boys fished generally shallow shores to compile their 10/11.22kg bag. In stark contrast to other teams, Lyndcraft Boats upgraded their bag a few times.

This was Matt and Travis’s maiden Classic win, and comes on top of a very consistent series in 2009. The boys also claimed third place in the series, which is testament to their consistency throughout the three rounds.

Big Bream the difference in Series win

Two of the teams fighting it out for the series win, Team Cranka Pro and Team www.sportsfishtasmania.com were only separated by a few places, and in the end it was the biggest bream of the weekend caught by Andrew Cox that gave them the breathing space to claim the series win on count back.

Both teams were tied on equal point at the end of the series, with the series decided by the team placing highest in the last round. That big bream was just enough to deliver team Cranka Pro two higher places up the table and the overall series win.

Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic Series Champions Steve Steer and Andrew Cox display the victor’s trophy

Team members Steve Steer and Andrew Cox finished the series with two fourth places and a sixth to just pip out Leigh McKenzie and Patrick Sullivan.

Steer and Cox win a trip for two anglers, their car and boat on the Spirit of Tasmania to compete in the National Bream Classic Grand Final in Victoria later this year.

This series would not have been possible without the fantastic support of our major sponsor Spirit of Tasmania, Daiwa, Berkley, Ecogear, Shimano, Strikpro, Howler Custom Rods, The Tasman Door Centre, Warwick and Sally Medwin for their very generous fuel vouchers.

The tournament scene takes a break now in Tasmania until October, when the Spirit of Tasmania Trout Classic Series will be held in the Central Highlands.

Day One

All eyes were on top-ranked Team Tasfish.com/Bigfin after some very bold predictions in the weeks leading up to the event.

Most teams headed through the newly-marked cut and made their way down to the numerous flats and bars in the main estuary. Several teams also headed upstream to try their luck, and also to let the spray settle on the cut.

The new channel markers were brilliant, which is a credit to Mike Stevens who organised the work through Marine and Safety Tasmania and Shane Ling who also put in some well-placed markers.

Plenty of bream were on the chew, with 100 fish weighed in and 17 teams coming back to scale with their five fish limit on day one.

Teams started weighing in early, especially Team www.sportsfishtasmania.com, and why not with a huge 5.69kg bag with a spanking big bream that eased the scales down to 1.47kg.

As all the teams weighed in it quickly became apparent that the system was full of 800g fish, and that winners would need one or two big kickers to keep ahead of the pack.

Weighing in nearly last, Team Cranka Pro pushed straight to the top with a 5.71kg bag to start day two with a slender 20g lead.

Team Tackle Us were in third place, thanks in part to an awesome 1.6kg Big Bream, which appeared to be a Tas Bream Classic record.

Day Two

Day two started out much the same as day one, with perfect conditions greeting teams. With the fish seemingly widespread throughout the lower estuary system, teams soon spread out. While teams such as Bream it On caught most of their big five fish back upstream of the start, most decided to head down through the tight and shallow section to see what all the fuss was about.

Team Pellows Saws and Mowers weighed in early, and reversed their day one donut with a five fish bag. However as the clock ticked nearer to 2pm the bulk of the teams headed back to scale.

A very tense weigh-in followed, with Team Sportsfishtasmania.com setting the early trend with a 4.63kg bag, almost a full kilo lighter than day one but heading to the top of the table with a 10/10.31kg limit.

In contrast Team Ecogear/Nitro pulled in with a 5.32kg bag, nearly 800g heavier than day one, but not enough to squeeze past sportsfishtasmania.com.

It looked like McKenzie and Sullivan were going to repeat their 2009 form until Team Tackle Us weighed in last and jumped 500g past them to seize their maiden Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic victory with 10/10.82kg.

Left: Second placed Team www.sportsfishtasmania.com, Leigh McKenzie and Patrick Sullivan. Right: Third placed Team Ecogear/Nitro, Plinio Taurian and Tim Hodge

Big Bream Record?

Andrew Wells, of Team Tackle Us, Big Bream honours were short lived from day one, as Grant Stingel from Team St Helens Bait and Tackle eclipsed his thumper on day two with a mammoth 1.665kg horse claiming the Tackle Us Big Bream voucher and new record.

Top Team techniques

Third placed Team Ecogear/Nitro used a mixture of soft plastics rigged on 1/12oz and 1/8oz 1/0 jigs. The boys used the new Ecogearaqua 3” Bug Ants in A04, A05 and A06 colours to add to their mix of soft baits. They used 15 different patterns and colours and rarely threw the same baits for more than a few casts.

This constant switching of lures worked well enough to tempt bites needed during the generally slow bite. Tim used a mixture of bright coloured soft baits and a rip and pause retrieve, while Plinio stuck to more natural tones and slower twitch and draw type movements in an attempt to cover all bases.

“Day one saw a couple of good fish landed in the first two hours and then a series of missed opportunities which meant we had to move to our second spot in order to fill our bag, but no upgrades,” said Plinio.

Second placed www.sportsfishtasmania.com used mainly soft plastics to compile their 10 fish for 10.31kg. Patrick Sullivan and Leigh McKenzie used Gulp 6” Sandworms, Gulp fry and Gulp 4” Sand eels. These plastics were coupled to 1/16oz and 1/8oz jigheads and 4lb fluorocarbon and fished deeper water between 2-4m.

McKenzie and Sullivan boated around 20 fish for the two days, upgrading several times on the way to their limit bags.

Winning tactics

The key element for the winning team Tackle Us was smart pre-fishing and sticking to their plan. Lister and Wells pre-fished intelligently and found some key structure, which proved to be their ‘honey-hole’ over the two days. They interchanged between this spot and a deeper channel area, resting the structure for several hours at a time.

This strategy proved to be crucial, with the boys catching nearly 50 bream for the two days, mostly off this piece of hidden structure.

While the second and third placed teams relied on soft plastics for their bags, Tackle us persisted with hardbodied lures, which Lister felt was the key.

“We noticed after day one that the live well was empty of the usual shell and crab pieces. Combined with the large amount of baitfish around the structure lead us to believe that the bream were focussed on baitfish, rather than the usual crab and shellfish” Lister said.

Team Tackle Us used the Zipbait Rigge 60SS on the shallower sections and Ecogear SX40 and MX62 in the deeper sections. Wells teamed this with Yamatoa 3lb fluorocarbon on Daiwa Luvius reels and Daiwa Interline Tournament Z and Tournament Master Z rods.

Lister used Megabass Destroyer and Samurai Reaction rods coupled with Daiwa Luvius reels, Daiwa Tournament braid and Daiwa Tournament fluorocarbon.

The StrikePro improvement award for day one went to Team Sitting Ducks and the Strikepro Big Bream on a Strikepro lure went to Tom Viney with a 1.24kg specimen.

The Tackle Us Big Bream (overall) was a 1.665kg horse caught by Grant Stingel.

Many thanks to major sponsors Spirit of Tasmania, Berkley, Daiwa, Strikepro, Tackle Us, and to Warwick and Sally Medwin for their super generous personal sponsorship of $200 worth of fuel vouchers.

All eyes now turn to the final round of the Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic on the Derwent River on May 15-16.

With Team Sportsfishtasmana.com and Team Ecogear/Nitro tied on points at the top of the table, the final round will be very exciting indeed.

Marvellous conditions greeted the 25 starting teams in round one of the 2010 Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic series.

After a fun filled Howler Custom Rods briefing, where Tim Colgrave won the Howler Custom rod, valued at around $300.00, teams soon filed off to their respective dens.

In cool and overcast conditions and light winds, the teams snaked their way slowly to the end of the 5knot limit before dispersing to all corners of Georges Bay.

With tides suiting the flats style angler, many teams headed for shallow water to fill their five fish limit.

During weigh in it soon became apparent that this was going to be great day, with 18 out of 25 teams recording a five fish limit, and only one team bringing donuts to the scale.

Some quite large bream were weighed in, with several contenders for the Tackle Us Big Bream amongst them.

Weights include the bream bags, so all weights are 495grams heavier than actual weight.

Second placed Plinio Taurian and Tim Hodge from Team Ecogear/Nitro at the presentation

Day One
Tim Farrell held the Tackle Us big bream lead with a cracker at 1.93kg (including bag).

Team Roz Homes and Construction won the Strike Pro encouragement award for Day One, which includes some hand picked Strike Pro Reaction Baits and some Strike Pro hardbodied lures.

Team www.tasfish.com/Bigfin of Mike Stevens and Leroy Tirant fished the flats extremely well to hold a 650gram lead after the weigh in was completed for day one.

Most teams were tight-lipped out techniques and locations for the first day’s session, keeping their powder dry for day two of round one of the Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic.

Day Two
Day two of the first Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic round saw a continuation of the consistent fishing from day one.

Teams set off in a constant drizzle, with Team Tasfish.com – Bigfin leading the pack out onto Georges Bay to protect their 650gram lead from day one.

All boats made the most of the run-in tides and overcast conditions to try and capitalise on the shallow water bite in the early stages of the session.

While some teams felt that the fishing was tough, all teams managed to bring fish to scales, including some thumping contenders for the Tackle Us Big Bream. Some teas reported catching over 60 fish for the two days, which is awesome fishing in anyone’s book.

212 bream were weighed in over the two days between 25 teams, which will certainly make competitors for the ABT qualifier in March very happy indeed.

Third placed Team www.sportsfishtasmania.com of Leigh McKenzie and Patrick Sullivan weighed in a 10 fish bag of 9.97 (including bag), and caught most of their fish on hardbodies fished over the flats in quite shallow water. Event though fish were coming to the hardbodies, McKenzie experimented with soft plastics for very little result.

Second placed Team Ecogear/Nitro used the same sorts of tactics, and hunted out the bigger bream for the top bag for day two. Plinio Taurian used Ecogear hardbodies lures to take plemty of great sized bream, while team mate Tim Hodge’s bag was compiled with Zipbait Khamsin Junior hardbodied lures fished in 1m of water on the flats.

However it was Team www.tasfish.com – Bigfin that held their day one lead to take out round one of the Spirit of Tasmania Classic.

Round one winners Team www.tasfish.com/Bigfin Mike Stevens and Leroy Tirant explain the finer points of their solid win

The team consisting of Mike Stevens and Leroy Tirant used a variety of hardbodied lures on the flats to quickly compile a decent bag. Mike Stevens commented that a great deal of their angling efficiency was due to new ipilot technology from Minn Kota which enabled the team to hold position with the electric using GPS technology.

“A few things we put in place were – a plan that we stuck to; Lucky Craft lures – worked a treat, plus a shallow Stiffy Prowler. A Push Pole held us in position without having the noise/vibrations of the electric going; ipilot installed on the Minn Kota.” Mike said.

“The ipilot is awesome – we had about the first one in Australia thanks to Leroy and BLA supplying it on Thursday. They are GPS based and will repeat a track you have fished on and hold you in position using the spot lock/anchor feature – regardless of current, wind and so on” said Mike Stevens at the presentation.

Together with a range of hardbodies from Lucky Craft, and a Prowler Stiffy Minnow, the team cemented their reputation as the ones to beat in this year’s in this year’s Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic Series.

Tackle Us Big Bream
The Tackle Us Big Bream was caught by Andrew Kruska with a thumper of 2.12kg (including bag), which less the bag weight would have come in around 1.6kg. Each round sees Tackle Us at Kingston providing a $200 voucher for the winner of the Tackle Us Big Bream.

Teams now prepare for the second round on the Swan River in mid April.

Many thanks to all sponsors: Spirit of Tasmania, Squidgies, Daiwa, Ecogear, Pure Fishing, Tackle Us, Howler Custom Rods, Tasman Door Centre and Warwick and Sally Medwin for their super-generous donation of 2x $100 fuel vouchers for each round.

Saturday will see the beginning of the first round of the 2010 Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic Championship to be held at Georges Bay, St Helens.

The Bream classic championship is held over three rounds, the first in St Helens and corresponding rounds on the Swan River at Swansea in April and the final round on the Derwent River in May.

For the first round, a record 26 teams have registered to take part, each vying for maximum points to increase their standing in taking out the overall Bream classic championship.

Anglers will use soft plastic and hard body lures to tempt the bream, and the team to finish with the heaviest bag of 10 fish at the end of the two day event will be named winner of the round. The team with the most accumulated points after round will be crowned 2010 Sprit of Tasmania Bream Classic champions.

Tournament organiser Neil Grose expects a highly competitive field for the first round: “2009 ABT qualifier winner Steve Steer will be fishing in a team, and I expect they will be very competitive, particularly as the bream fishing in Georges Bay is at its best this time of year.

“Last years tournament came right down to the final round, with the winning team finishing seventh in the round however emerging victorious in the overall tournament by less than 10 points, which has really set the precedent for this years competition.”

The fiercely contested 2009 Classic saw team sportsfishtasmania.com taking line honours. “There are a lot of new teams this year so the competition will be red hot, and we’ll have our work cut for us” said sportsfishtasmania.com team member Leigh McKenzie.

“Georges Bay is quickly becoming one of Australia’s premier Bream fisheries, and I think that will help even out the playing field, so it will be interesting to see which team will come out on top this year” said McKenzie.

Bream fishing is fast growing sport in Australia and tournament organiser Neil Grose expects this trend to continue “Bream fishing as a sport has an emerging profile in Australia and it’s great to see more people get behind it and participate in Tasmania”

“What’s great about the classic is it caters for a wide variety of people, there are no restrictions on age or gender, anyone is welcome to participate” says Grose.

“This year we’ve received entries from south Australia and Victoria as well as the local Tasmanian anglers which is a testament to the quality of fishing here in Tasmania.

“Furthermore anglers will be fishing from high speed fishing boats designed to get the teams to the best spots first, so that on top of the big live bream tank at the weigh in area, the Georges bay event will also be great for spectator viewing.”

The first round of the Bream Classic begins Saturday, February 13 with anglers launching boats at 7am from the St Helens foreshore, and returning for weigh-in of a five fish maximum bag at 2pm where caught bream will be held in a tank for spectators to view prior to release. Winners will be announced on Sunday, February 14 at the conclusion of the day tw- weigh in.

Winners will receive prizes from event sponsors Daiwa, Spirit of Tasmania, Shimano, Pure Fishing, Ecogear, Howler custom rods and Takle Us Kingston.

By NEIL GROSE | The first round of the 2009 Spirit of Tasmania Trout Classic was held on Great Lake in terrible conditions, with wind averaging 25knots and gust exceeding 40 knots.

However the wind was from a reasonably favourable direction, allowing all teams to find productive water in safety.

All 18 teams were on the water early, so by 6:50am there were rooster tails heading out of Swan Bay below the Great Lake Hotel and out into the main body of the lake.

Team Bigfin Sportsfishing with one of their 12 fish

All teams managed to find the fish early as the trout were obviously looking to feed hard before the brunt of the expected cold front hit.

Sure enough, most teams struggled to land fish after 10:30am with the exception of Team Spirit of Tasmania and fourth placed Team Juicy Isle.

Team Juicy Isle stayed in Swan Bay owing to their small boat size, and managed to tally up 10 trout totalling 514cm.

Third placed Bigfin Sportsfishing used the rough water capacity of their large boat to head north into Elizabeth Bay, which delivered them 10 fish before retreating to the shelter of Swan Bay where they notched another 2 nice trout.

Team BridgesBros fished the windswept shores to finish in second place.

Second placed team Bridges Brothers also erred on the side of caution, and after an initial foray around the Bee Hives decided to head back into relative calm water inside Swan Bay, where they completed their 12 fish haul.

But it was team Spirit of Tasmania consisting of Patrick Sullivan and Andy McCarthy that smashed the weather with a Great Lake Trout Classic record haul of 21 fish totalling 10.33 metres, winning the round.

Fishing mainly on the exposed shore along Becketts Bay between McClanaghans Island and Tods Corner, the boys found plenty of fish willing to play ball in the very rough conditions.

Their bag consisted of a 50/50 split between rainbows and browns – all fish taken on Berkley T tails in Black and Gold. Sullivan fished Pflueger reels and rods, while McCarthy fished with Howler custom rods and Pfluger reels; both used 1/8th and 1/16th ounce jigheads according to wind strength and shore depth.

For their efforts they took home two Team Daiwa Tierra reels and a $500 cheque, second place received an EcoGear prize pack and $200, third place a Berkley prize pack and $200, and fourth received a Berkley prize pack.

Biggest trout of the round was landed by Peter Garwood with a massive 60cm brown trout taken near the dam wall in very rough conditions.

We would like to thank our sponsors Spirit if Tasmania, Daiwa, Berkley, Ecogear and the Great Lake Hotel for their support.

I’d also like to thank Damien and Nick for their help checking boats, retrieving score sheets and with the final scoring.

A massive thanks to Jason Harris for the PA system as well – it certainly makes the whole event run smoothly.

118 trout were caught in total (58.6 metres) with an average length of just a smidge under 50cm. Very impressive results on a shockingly windy day.

The next round is on the 28th of November on Arthurs Lake – can Team Spirit of Tasmania make it four Trout Classic round wins in a row?

By NEIL GROSE | An unprecedented heat wave greeted anglers on the pre-fish of he second round of the Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic on the picturesque Swan River — with temperatures soaring above 40°C.

As a result day one catches were down on expectations, although the top half of the field managed to get a four or five fish bag.

Sportsfishtasmania.com were the leading team on day one, but only by the narrowest of margins to Riverside Quality Meats and Bream Brothers — 25g separating the top three teams. Day one saw 57 bream weighed in with an average weight of around 0.8kg.

Day Two started a lot cooler and promised much, with most teams heading downstream to fish the flats and racks. Team Sportsfishtasmania.com continued their day one form (where they caught over 30 bream) and pulled a great five fish bag, upgrading many times through the day.

Bream Brothers weighed in early with a cracking bag and team Zipbaits with a Tackle Us Big Bag of 5.62kg (the biggest of day two) followed through from day one with a trouble free session to nearly pull back the deficit from day one.

Day two saw 77 bream weighed in for a lower average weight of 0.77kg, but they did look rather nice swimming around in the ‘Super Mini Tank’.

Tasmania is acknowledged as the best bream fishery in Australia and the five annual competitions and the significant partnership with “Spirit of Tasmania” will enable Tasmania to be a major component of these national competitions.

Later Tasmanian rounds of the bream competitions are expected to attract up to 60 teams from around Australia and work to attract international competitors is underway.

These competitors often stay for up to two weeks enjoying Tasmania’s unique fishing resources in both salt and fresh water and are therefore significant contributors to our annual tourism spend.
