Andy McCarthy of Team Spirit of Tasmania with two of his five fish on day two

A very tough tournament on the Derwent for Round Three in the Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic really opened the championship up.

With a very subdued Calcutta on the Howler Custom Rods pre fish briefing, most teams were talking about where they hadn’t caught fish, rather than where they had.

Young gun Isaac Harris scored the Howler Custom Rods $350 voucher, making his weekend a winner before the comp had even started.

A large crowd turned up to see the very tight weigh in

Harvesting wild brown trout eggs at Liawenee Trout Weekend

The popular Inland Fisheries Trout Weekend is on again and everyone is invited.

Come and see hundreds of wild brown trout on their annual spawning run from Great Lake in the Liawenee Canal.

Watch wild trout being stripped of eggs for culture. Catch a trout for dinner from the kid’s fish-out pond.

Visit trade exhibits, with boats and fishing gear. Enjoy refreshments, competitions and give-aways.

View displays about fisheries management. Learn what’s happening around the fishery. See live freshwater fish aquaria. Ask questions of Inland Fisheries staff.

Talk to trout fishing and fly-tying experts. Take a helicopter ride above the Lake or a bus ride along the Canal.

Buy something special, including a Trout Fish Tasmania souvenir. Make it a day out with the family or a weekend away.

The event is held at the Inland Fisheries Service Field Station, Liawenee, Great Lake and runs from 10am to 3pm on both days.

It takes about one and a half hours to drive to Liawenee from Launceston or Hobart via the Highland Lakes Road. The weather is very changeable in the highlands, and normally cold, so it is important to dress warmly.

Click here to download the Trout Weekend flyer for more details and a map of how to get there.

For more information, call the Inland Fisheries Service on (03) 6261 8050 or 1300 INFISH during business hours. — Sarah Graham, IFS.

Part of the rubbish haul

IFS participated in the recent Business Clean Up Australia Day with four teams picking up rubbish at a range of popular fishing waters.

Participantsd note that the amount of rubbish left at some of the State’s most popular fishing waters, such as Penstock Lagoon, waters in the Bradys system, Lake Echo was significantly reduced, while the waters in the lower Derwent region, particularly the Broad River area, were “quite disgraceful”.

South Australian competitor Tom Deer with some of the marvellous St Helens bream

Marvellous conditions greeted the 25 starting teams in round one of the 2010 Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic series.

After a fun filled Howler Custom Rods briefing, where Tim Colgrave won the Howler Custom rod, valued at around $300.00, teams soon filed off to their respective dens.

In cool and overcast conditions and light winds, the teams snaked their way slowly to the end of the 5knot limit before dispersing to all corners of Georges Bay.

With tides suiting the flats style angler, many teams headed for shallow water to fill their five fish limit.

During weigh in it soon became apparent that this was going to be great day, with 18 out of 25 teams recording a five fish limit, and only one team bringing donuts to the scale.

Some quite large bream were weighed in, with several contenders for the Tackle Us Big Bream amongst them.

Weights include the bream bags, so all weights are 495grams heavier than actual weight.

Second placed Plinio Taurian and Tim Hodge from Team Ecogear/Nitro at the presentation

Day One
Tim Farrell held the Tackle Us big bream lead with a cracker at 1.93kg (including bag).

Team Roz Homes and Construction won the Strike Pro encouragement award for Day One, which includes some hand picked Strike Pro Reaction Baits and some Strike Pro hardbodied lures.

2009 winners Leigh McKenzie and Patrick Sullivan of team sportsfishtasmania.com

Saturday will see the beginning of the first round of the 2010 Spirit of Tasmania Bream Classic Championship to be held at Georges Bay, St Helens.

The Bream classic championship is held over three rounds, the first in St Helens and corresponding rounds on the Swan River at Swansea in April and the final round on the Derwent River in May.

For the first round, a record 26 teams have registered to take part, each vying for maximum points to increase their standing in taking out the overall Bream classic championship.

Anglers will use soft plastic and hard body lures to tempt the bream, and the team to finish with the heaviest bag of 10 fish at the end of the two day event will be named winner of the round. The team with the most accumulated points after round will be crowned 2010 Sprit of Tasmania Bream Classic champions.

By NEIL GROSE | The first round of the 2009 Spirit of Tasmania Trout Classic was held on Great Lake in terrible conditions, with wind averaging 25knots and gust exceeding 40 knots.

However the wind was from a reasonably favourable direction, allowing all teams to find productive water in safety.

All 18 teams were on the water early, so by 6:50am there were rooster tails heading out of Swan Bay below the Great Lake Hotel and out into the main body of the lake.

All teams managed to find the fish early as the trout were obviously looking to feed hard before the brunt of the expected cold front hit.

Sure enough, most teams struggled to land fish after 10:30am with the exception of Team Spirit of Tasmania and fourth placed Team Juicy Isle.

Team Juicy Isle stayed in Swan Bay owing to their small boat size, and managed to tally up 10 trout totalling 514cm.

Third placed Bigfin Sportsfishing used the rough water capacity of their large boat to head north into Elizabeth Bay, which delivered them 10 fish before retreating to the shelter of Swan Bay where they notched another 2 nice trout.

Team BridgesBros fished the windswept shores to finish in second place.

Team BridgesBros fished the windswept shores to finish in second place.

Second placed team Bridges Brothers also erred on the side of caution, and after an initial foray around the Bee Hives decided to head back into relative calm water inside Swan Bay, where they completed their 12 fish haul.
